James W. Larrabee was born in Rensselaer County New York. He entered the military at Mendota, Illinois.

James received the Medal of Honor for his Gallantry in the charges of the volunteer storming party on May 23, 1863. The Medal of Honor was issued on 2 September 1893. Larrabee was a Corporal in Company I in the 55th Illinois Infantry.

Descendants of James W. Larrabee still reside in the Mendota area.
